Sophie Barnes
The foundations of our program are in an off-court training program that athletes move through in stages. Very few athletes have embraced the underpinning values of the training program as much as Sophie Barnes! Having completed the first four stages of training, Sophie developed her own physical and mental training routine as an athlete. In stage 5, she began to develop leadership during a mentorship, and in stage 6 she started helping us coach some younger athletes, through her leadership-in-action program. Sophie is now the first and only athlete to have committed to a stage 7 program! She spent the entire Winter attending practices with our 14U Rep team that competed in Moncton this season.
In our rural area, role models are difficult to find. While also training with her 18U team, Sophie was a blessing to have at our 14U practices. The athletes could see first-hand what it means to work hard and commit to growth. As a setter, Sophie has an incredible understanding of court tactics. However, her athletic versatility on the court allowed her to relate technically and tactically to all the 14U athletes. She definitely had some extra tips for the setters though :)
Beyond volleyball feedback, Sophie's personality shines in her interactions with those that enjoy learning from her. Our younger athletes had an awesome Winter of learning how to smile through challenge, have fun and enjoy the process of preparing for competition, and to know what it means to build team chemistry! Much of these lessons came directly from Sophie!
Congratulations Sophie, and thank you for your commitment...not just to the athletes who look up to you, but to the Training Program that is preparing you for so much future success!
Alley Dove
Alley Dove is a true testament to the value of commitment and training hard! She is the first ever winner of our Club Bingo - a game that challenges athletes to complete various tasks related to warmup routine, gym setup, team chemistry, and on-court skills. She is almost always the first one at practice, setting the bar for dedication. When an ankle injury sidelined her for a portion of the season, she continued to attend practices, supporting her team and the program with her positivity and leadership! Her commitment to her off-court training has resulted in serious increases in jump height and foot speed. The future is bright for this rising star, who will be representing the province at the Eastern Elite Championship in Moncton, New Brunswick this Summer!
Julia White
Julia White continues to exemplify the lessons that our program aims to teach our athletes: Goal-Setting, Hard Work, Dedication, Commitment to Improvement, Sportsmanship, Team Chemistry, and of course Community-Building and a Growth Mindset! Julia continues to seek new experiences that enable her to progress as an athlete. This Summer will be no exception: she will have the honor to represent our province at the Canada Games being held in St. John's in August! Although Julia's dominance as an athlete is truly starting to show, she continues to demonstrate kindness, empathy, and an authentic leadership style. With only one year of High School Volleyball under her belt, we look forward to watching Julia continue to grow and lead! Julia, Thank You for epitomizing a Growth Mindset, and Best Wishes with your travel and competition this Summer with the Canada Games Team!
Julia White
When Julia White sets a goal, be careful not to doubt her. After already increasing her vertical jump four inches in her first year of training, she set an incredibly high bar for her next level. Julia was the first athlete to decide to pick up a couple dumbbells while doing her high-hops. And yeah, she got to her next level. She's got so much more than height. She's got grit, determination, and an intense penchant for improvement. On top of this, her coachability is second-to-none. Always looking for feedback and opportunities to tweak her skills, Julia will undoubtedly continue to enhance her on-court and off-court skills throughout High School, which she's just entering in September of 2024! But wait, Julia is also a member of our community organization, the CBN Volleyball Club, where she was given the Sportsmanship Award, which is based solely on nominations from opposing teams! Her off-court presence is as significant as it is on-court (where she completely dominates at the net), with encouragement and support of all athletes in our local volleyball communities. As she enters Stage 5 (Mentorship) of our Elite Training Program, we are very much looking forward to seeing Julia bring her leadership skills to the next generation of athletes, and helping us to share and spread a Growth Mindset! Julia, Thank You for epitomizing a Growth Mindset, and Best Wishes with your travel this Summer!
Mary-Grace Slade
When Mary-Grace Slade puts her mind on something, she will work tirelessly to make it happen. Once exposed to our off-court Elite Training Program, she embraced the principles and ran with them. Taking on her own training regime, Mary-Grace is an absolute role model for what it means to get out what you put in! Very few athletes have shown the growth that Mary-Grace has demonstrated this past year, and this is a direct result of her work ethic! Add unparalleled coachability to the mix, and the formula for success is in place: Mary-Grace actively seeks feedback wherever possible, and implements every suggestion into her skill set! Embracing a switch from Left Side to Middle may have been her biggest move. She now sets the tone for her team's offense, and is a wall at the net! She has developed an incredible ability to read plays from the opposing team, and has also embraced the opportunity to impact her team's defense from the back row. As our program continues to work on its goal of community-building, Mary-Grace has a massively important role in growing the sport in her school and community, a region that is in the early stages of embracing the growth of our sport! Mary-Grace, Thank You for epitomizing a Growth Mindset, and Best Wishes with your travel this Summer!
